Club Golf d’Aro -Mas Nou is located inside a cork oak grove in the Gavarres Protected Natural Area and this past June the cork oak cork peeling was practiced as part of our golf course.
It consists of extracting its thick bark, with the help of an ax and a lever. With this product of proximity and environmental value, plugs, insulation for construction and some bee hives are manufactured.
The cork oak takes approximately 50 years to grow enough to be able to make the first cork extraction. Then it can be peeled every 14 years.
In Llofriu, every June, they celebrate the Cork Peel Festival and in the Cork Museum of Palafrugell the culture and natural heritage of the world of cork in Catalonia is well documented. Note that almost the entire Costa Brava is full of cork oaks…
From the Club Golf d’Aro Mas Nou we want to highlight this traditional activity that has recovered a lot lately, which helps to keep the forest in good condition and take advantage of a quality local product.
